    If you're an auto enthusiast, you can hardly be faulted for thinking Honda has largely abandoned you. In fact, you might even feel justified in thinking that the once enthusiast-driven company has lost the plot and gone Toyota , ditching drivers' cars for various forays into the hybrid scene and profitable-but-bland people-movers of various shapes and sizes.

    You might even get depressed when you look at Honda 's enthusiast car portfolio circa and compare it to its portfolio today. These days, the options are substantially more limited. There's the oddball CR-Z and the only member of the above list to make it out of the aughts, the Civic Si. Somewhat of a constant in Honda's lineup for some two decades, the continued presence of the Si has served as a beacon of hope for enthusiasts even as the rest of its sporty brethren died off one by one over the past decade, each leaving no heirs.

    But the Si, like the rest of the Civic lineup, has just undergone a fairly significant transformation, bringing its hope-bringer status into question. One reason why is that the Honda Civic Si is no longer powered by the high-revving K20 2. It has made way for a slightly modified version of the K24 2.

    As a result, the character of the Si is decidedly different. The tangible benefits of the new engine include a slight increase in acceleration performance -- the Si sprints to 60 mph in 6. There is also an uptick in its figure-eight performance -- The new model also stops a bit sooner, requiring feet to go from 60 mph to a dead stop, 2 feet sooner than the previous-gen model. But all these improvements come at a price -- a piece of the Si's soul.

    Aside from losing the nearly rotary-level redline, the Si also loses some of its predecessor's smoothness. The K24 is far from a bad motor, but it lacks the K20's sublime -- and somewhat immature -- qualities. The shifter is decent, but not as gloriously buttery-smooth as it used to be. Sometimes, you'll moneyshift into fourth when looking for sixth.

    On the upside, pedals are positioned nicely for heel-toe shifting. Once up to speed and in your chosen gear, however, the Si is delightfully tossable with barely a hint of understeer, thanks in part to the standard helical limited-slip differential. Overall, the steering doesn't feel as quick as it should be in a Civic Si, but it remains responsive and accurate.

    Brakes are good and not grabby, though associate road test editor Carlos Lago noted that during testing, they began to smell noticeably after a few hard stops and pedal feel worsened slightly. Inside, the Si has a proper driver-oriented cockpit, with every control of note easily within the driver's reach. A number of fresh displays have been added, including a sequential rev-limit display to the left of the speedometer.

    To the right of the speedo is what Honda calls the i-MID screen. I-MID stands for Intelligent Multi-Function Display and it has a number of modes, the most important of which tell you what tunes you're listening to, what your fuel economy is, and just how much power as a percentage the car is making at that very instant. If you don't spring for the optional nav, odds are the music info screen will be the one you're on most of the time, especially if you're plugging a music player into the standard USB slot -- something you'll want to do most of the time on models without the nav, because they don't come with satellite radio.

    Speaking of tunes, the Civic Si comes standard with a watt, 7-speaker audio system. It's not capable of panel-rattling booming, though a sub is part of the package, but it sounds quite nice and much better than many pricier systems found in higher-end cars. There is one big negative about the interior, however: They're just mildly bolstered on the side, so you'll be doing some sliding when shunting the car around a track or canyon, lack adequate lumbar support, and have uncomfortable -- though not stiff -- cushions.
